Writing is always refered to as a solitary profession,
but when I decided to become a writer, I made more new friends
than I would have thought possible. Why? Because we all have
that need to reach out. To help each other, ask and answer
questions, brainstorm, socialize or just cry on a sympathetic
shoulder. No one will ever understand you as well as another
writer. We're out here, find us.
I'm sure I would have published eventually,
but without my local chapter of Romance Writers of America,
I doubt it would have happened so quickly. Writing organizations
can give you the opportunity to get hands on experience in
the industry. They provide workshops, conferences, access
to agents and editors, promotion for your career, public speaking
experience, volunteer opportunities and the chance to meet
new people.
