I hope Nike doesn't sue me for stealing their
slogan, because the only thing that will truly make you a
writer is WRITING. I know, it seems obvious, but it's also
the hardest thing for a writer to do.
Speaking as a person facing extremely hectic
deadlines stretched out over the next year, I can tell you
honestly, most of the time...I don't want to do it.
It's hard. I'd rather sleep, or watch TV or read. But you
know what? No one cares. I have to do it--my contract
says so. Plus, I've already spent the money. I can't wait
for inspiration or the mood to hit me. I have to plunge right
in and go for it.
It doesn't have to be good. It just has to be.
You can fix it later. Just get it down on paper. You could
wait the rest of your life for the perfect words to come.
The fact is, you can't get to the perfect word until you put
down the wrong word first. At that point, you've got something
to work with. Give yourself permission to write badly. That's
not so hard, is it? We all can do that. Just do it.
