Yes, I know, it's brilliant. We always think
our work is brilliant—except when we think it sucks.
Those are the extremes. It's impossible to be objective, so
it helps to have a second opinion—or a third and fourth.
Find some one you trust, a spouse, sibling, teacher, friend
or critique group who can help you edit your work. No, it
doesn't count if your mother loved it. You need an objective
opinon from someone who knows what he or she is doing.
I use a critique group—two in fact—to
help me in this area. Many people find it hard to work with
a group and it's not for everyone. Finding a critique group
that works for you may be as difficult as finding a lasting
marriage. Some authors prefer to work only with their editors.
That decision is up to you, but everybody needs somebody sometime.
